Monte Sano Camp

Heroes of 76

Monte Sano Mountain is a landmark of Huntsville, Alabama, from which Monte Sano Camp, Heroes of ’76 took its name.  The name Monte Sano is Spanish for “Mountain of Health” and is the site of Monte Sano State Park.  One of the local legends is of a young Indian maiden whose name was Monte.  According to the legend, Monte refused to accept the romantic advances of a European explorer.  She knew that with him, others would come and change the land in which she had lived her life as the carefree daughter of an Indian Chief.  She pictured a future with him…”Axes and fallen trees! Foreign hats and smoking chimneys!  Guns and a scarcity of game!  Cleared fields and beaten paths!”.  She was moved to refusal by the pleading of her childhood sweetheart who whispered to her “Monte, Say No”!  Monte, Say No!”.
